Washington D.C.

I spent my college years in DC at American University, where I took several photography classes.

At first, I made pictures of my immediate surroundings: jazz band rehearsals, my roommate, and our building. I stuck with what I knew.

But during a great photojournalism class, I moved out of my comfort zone and started to find things to photograph that interest me. My fascination with people who have obsessions or are devoted to something in some way led me to two subjects: Philipos, a protester who lived in a shack directly opposite the white house and regaled me with stories of exploit with old school punk legends, and Mr. Young, the owner of a convenience store who has been collecting and displaying old film and digital cameras behind the deli counter for years.

I also photographed the workers in a food truck, who worked in a claustrophobic space that was half stovetop. Their dedication to the cuisine is evident.

All photos were shot on Sony A77 DSLR.
