Brighton, UK
I was lucky enough to visit Brighton during Mod Week, the time of year when all the old school skins and ska fans ride their Lambretta scooters down to the southern coast of the UK. There were hundreds of scooters parked on the sidewalk by the beach, and large groups of participants would ride by on the streets, turning the air to a stew of salt and gasoline.
I heard a lot from the old heads who remembered seeing bands like The Specials, Madness, and The Beat in their prime. I've loved all these bands for years, and knew of the subculture, but had never truly met the elders in the ways I may have in the DC punk scene. I honestly didn't know if this scene was even still around.
It is, and it's beautiful.
